Taking crypto payments to Mallorca's businesses
Local investors wanted cryptocurrency ATMs on the island. I argued that adoption would come through payments, so we built a point‑of‑sale system too: a working proof of concept by February 2019, and two ATMs live in Mallorca from July.

The situation
In the early months of 2019 several local businessmen asked me about an idea they had been brainstorming for weeks: installing cryptocurrency ATMs (cryptomats) around the island, where plenty of well‑off visitors spend their holidays.
I found it interesting but missing one thing. ATMs are good, but cryptocurrency adoption should be driven through payment processors.
What I did
- Advised adding point‑of‑sale systems so local businesses could start accepting cryptocurrency payments.
- Delivered a functional proof of concept for the POS by February 2019.
- Deployed two ATMs in Mallorca starting in July 2019.
- Developed the POS system further, with the back office our staff used to manage both the ATMs and the POS.
The result
The launch drew a lot of media coverage, including prime time on IB3, the Balearic television. We took part in an international blockchain event in September 2019 and a local blockchain conference in February 2020.
